The contemporary legend of Tamil films, Rajinikanth, turns 62. The indisputable matinee idol of our times and the superstar who is in the industry in some form or other for the past 37 years, Rajini has been a phenomenon no less. The Rajini phenomenon has been quite difficult to decipher and has paved ways to numerous researches. Despite the fact that Rajini is not as active as he used to be before in movies, the brand name commands as much popularity.
The cultural icon that he is Rajini’s frenzied fan following is proof to the fact that his fans idolize him and love him not only for his greater than life persona in movies but also his simplistic personality off screen. He influence far outreaches the boundaries of cinema and seamlessly permeates into politics as well. Across various languages, Rajini has so far appeared in about 150 films and won State awards, Padma Bhushan awards and the distinction of being the highest paid actor in the entire Asia only after Jackie Chan.
After the health scare of 2011 that sent his worried fan following into prayer induced mayhem, Rajini has still not appeared confident enough to appear in a full length movie. His new movie Kochadaiyaan will be the answer to his many times shelved Ranaa and the movie is touted to be done using motion capture technology using advanced techniques in the art of film making.
Though he keeps away from the festivities associated with the celebration of his birthdays, Rajni’s 62nd birthday is in many ways not his usual December 12th. His blockbuster Sivaji was released in 3D recently coinciding with his birthday. The 3D version is shorter by at least half an hour and is said to be a visual treat for the diehard Rajini fan. This version has been the collaboration of AVM productions, Prasad EFX and Real Image and the timing is sure to work well with fans.
A Rajini anthem, written by Annamalai, composed by Vijay Anthony and directed by Raghava Lawrence was released on YouTube recently. The brainchild of Lawrence, he brought onboard the rest of the artists to produce the anthem that can be watched and downloaded online for free. The song is sung by the Malaysian singer Emcee Jazz.
Though there are very many books, official and unofficial, about Rajini, it’s said that noted publishing house Penguin Books is planning to release the official biography of the superstar on his birthday. That is sure a fitting way to celebrate the star’s 62nd birthday.
Celebrations or otherwise, Rajini will remain a superstar for his ordinary fan who worship him for what he is in and out of the movie screen – the safe keeper of moral values and an honest good Samaritan. At least for planting those seeds of goodwill in the minds of his legions of fans, Rajini deserves to be remembered for eternity. Here’s wishing him good health and a long life on his birthday.
